Sunset Volcano Crater and Wupatki National Monument 5/14

Sunset Volcano Crater

We drove to Sunset Crater, the remnants of a volcano that erupted in the 11th and 12th centuries; the landscape of red and black volcanic cones stands in stark contrast to the flat surrounding desert. (borrowed that description from Deb n Dave's places to see book :).  On the way, we drove through two national forests and crossed the Arizona Divide.

There is a pretty severe problem with pine beetles wiping out the pine forests.

We hiked a short way to this multistory pueblo remain from one of three different cultures in the area previously.

Photo at right (getting better at the formatting) is of the mountain that is behind our KOA cabin.  Don went out earlier today and climbed to the top earlier this morning.  He said it was steep.
Grilling at the KOA for dinner tonight.
