He's back! Don lived in El Paso for five years about 26 years ago and things have changed somewhat. Oil wells remain a big presence. Roads seem a bit rougher, with speed limit of 80 mph they were darn unsafe in the middle part of the state on I10 and I20. With Pam setting the comfortable pace of about 72 mph, the ride continues to be pretty easy and enjoyable. Windy, windy across the plains. Also, we heard there's a large fire burning at the Texas/NM border. Hopin it's under control now, as that's where we'll be driving today!
Our first mountain range was the Guadalupe Mountains. We're at elevation of about 4000 feet. A big change from Tybee's sea level. In spite of previous warnings from last year's trip, we are enjoying some really good beef and alcohol! (These are no no's when you are adjusting to elevation, apparently.) We went to Carlos and Mickey's Mexican Restaurant last night for chimmiechongas and fahitas. Pam was tempted to go with the cheese casadias (her usual order of Mexican food), but decided to jump in and she enjoyed a sizzling platter of steak fahitas. Don in heaven with the Mexican food. Pam adjusting.
We stopped at a Subway for gas and lunch. Saw our first siting of Border Patrol Agents (at the Subway having lunch : )
El Paso is the only city in Texas on Mountain Timezone. We finally adjusted to the last time change, and now have yet another hour to adjust to. We've been getting an early start on the driving day, bout 8:00 am departure and finishing for the day by 3:00 pm. We have made pretty good time and only have 130 miles to drive today to arrive at our home for two weeks, a deluxe cabin at Silver City, NM KOA. Lookin forward to being settled in somewhere for two weeks (and hoping we can find somewhere to live after the 20th)!
